THE COACH
Early summers spent in Iowa on her Aunt's farm allowed Sarah MacKusick the opportunity to fall in love with horses. Back home in Georgia, Sarah began riding at the age of 7. She competed in the Hunter and Equitation ring under the tutelage of many top trainers in the Atlanta area, including Scott Armour and Woody Pforr, as well as earned many top placings in "A" shows at Chateau Elan and the Georgia International Horse Park.
Sarah went on to college at Georgia Southern University where she studied Anthropology and History. She was president of the Georgia Southern Equestrian Team for two and a half years. Riding under the GSUET coach Eleanor Ellis, Sarah was invited to compete at ANRC and qualified for IHSA Nationals in 2005. College summers were well spent in the mountains of North Carolina where she worked as a camp counselor and head riding instructor for Camp Glen Arden
After graduating from Georgia Southern with her bachelors degree, Sarah moved to Tallahassee where she worked as an Archaeologist for the State of Florida. Two years later, she pursued her dream of starting her own boarding and training facility, Iron Star Equestrian. She has since coached students to numerous placings in USEA Eventing and USDF Dressage shows. Her busy lesson program and support of students competitions leaves her little time to ride and compete her own horses! She continues her own education by clinicing with top riders such as USDF Gold Medalist Greta Wrigley, 'R' Judge and USDF Gold Medalist Brian MacMahon, USDF Gold Medalist Jodie Kelly and former US Olympic Team member Jill Hennenberg as well as auditing her students clinics with former US Olympic Coach Jimmy Wofford, USEA 3* rider Dom Schramm and Rolex 5* rider Katie Ruppel. She follows a "Learn by Doing" approach. She believes that saddle time of her students, proper equitation and balance along with encouraging ground instruction develops the most prepared and successful riders.

AT IRON STAR
With over 30 years of riding and training and over 15 years teaching experience, Sarah was the optimal choice for the Florida State University Dressage Team Coach. Her experienced lesson horses help bring Dressage to new riders and collegiate riders who don't own their own horses.
Sarah held a position with the Red Hills International Horse Trials held in Tallahassee as the Dressage Coordinator from 2013 - 2021..
Sarah's desire to improve not only her students skills but her own set her apart from many other trainers. Being active in the show arena and continuing her education is a large part of her philosophy.
